Sunday School is not new in the mission. It has been part of the church since its inception before it became an official Department in CAC worldwide.
Some assemblies and individuals had been practicing Sunday School as early as the 50s and 70s.
Some assemblies and individuals had been practicing Sunday School as early as the 50s and 70s.
Sunday School had been operating in some local assemblies in Christ Apostolic Church such as Mushin and Olorunsogo, in Lagos State, Oniyanrin and Olugbode, both in Ibadan, Oyo State, and in some other places that might not have been immediately known to others, through the individual efforts of some well-meaning brethren/ministers and groups that had tasted of the beauty of the programme, and who wanted the joy extended to others. It was also in existence in such places as Christ Apostolic Church Ikosi-Ketu assembly, where Sunday School started as early as the commencement of the church in 1974, with Brother F.O. Ojuolape (now pastor), Brother Joseph Ola Osunkoya (now pastor), late Evangelist Kayode, Brother Ebenezer Owodunni (now pastor), Brother Leke Obasoyin (now pastor), Brother John Agbaje (visiting teacher), Brother Dodo, Mrs. Oni, Sister Jumoke, Mrs. Fakoyejo (now midwife), and Elder Adeleke as the pioneer teachers.
These assemblies and individuals and many other unmentioned ones were independent of themselves in the preparation and dissemination of their respective Sunday School lessons. Most of them made use of Sunday School materials from the Assemblies of God, Baptist Church and others. Notable men of God like Pastor M.O. Yusuf and Pastor John Oyebanji are trailblazers in this respect. They took charge of their different assemblies, getting Sunday School pamphlets from other denominations to teach their congregations on Sundays.
The history of organised Sunday School in Christ Apostolic Church cannot be detached from the erstwhile President of the Church, Pastor E. H. L. Olusheye, assisted by Pastor S. O. Akinsulure. When Pastor Olusheye returned from Overseas, with Pastor Akinsulure in 1977, they came over to complement and harmonise these already existing individual efforts into an organised national and international Sunday School programme which cuts across the length and breadth of the Church, at home and abroad.
After the President of the church, Pastor E.T. Latunde gave Pastor Olusheye and his lieutenant the authority to continue with his God-given Christian educational vision, the Church Authority constituted a Committee for Christian Education to oversee the Sunday School matter, and Pastor Olusheye was made the chairman. This was formalised in October 1976, after Pastor Olusheye and Pastor Akinsulure presented their proposed programme to the Standing Committee of the then Christ Apostolic Church Supreme Council, and that was the meeting that officially and finally ratified the establishment of the Sunday School Department in Christ Apostolic Church.
The Sunday School Department programme was fully launched in 1977, to coordinate the affairs of Sunday School in the Church, and to hold annual national rallies to bless the entire Church and the teachers, in particular. Pastor E.H.L. Olusheye was appointed the National Sunday School Superintendent and assisted by Pastor S.O. Akinsulure. They were charged with oversight of the department.
In January 1977, the first Sunday School lecture pamphlet was written by Pastor Olusheye and his assistant, Pastor Akinsulure. It was a miniature replica of the present CAC Sunday School lessons handbook. It came to replace the ones that were formerly being used, published by the Assemblies of God Church. The duo had to write, publish, and distribute at their expense.
The Sunday School Pamphlet is now being published in different languages, including English, Yoruba, Igbo, Efik, Hausa, TIV, French, and Isoko. The lessons also exist in Braille (for the visually challenged) which up till now is given out free of charge by the Authority of Christ Apostolic Church.
Other Sunday School publications are: Sunday School Teachers’ Manual (in English and Yoruba languages), Parents’ Day Pamphlets, Sunday School Day Pamphlets, Children Sunday School manuals and workbook; and the Daily Devotional Book (LIVING WATER and OMI-IYE). The circulation of these publications even extends to other denominations and overseas countries.
The Sunday School Department has been an integral part of Christ Apostolic Church Oke-Igbala, Ketu from its inception and was recognized at the national level, even before it became a department in Christ Apostolic Church worldwide. The pioneer members were Sister Comfort Oguntubo (deceased), Evangelist Kayode Opajobi (Church Evangelist – deceased), and Bro. J. Ola Osunkoya (now a Pastor), Bro. Ebenezer Owoduni (now a Pastor), Bro. Leke Obasoyin (now a Pastor), Bro. John Agbaje (Visiting Teacher), Bro. Dodo, Mrs. Dorcas Fakoyejo (now a Midwife) and Sis. Jumoke Osinubi (now a Deaconess).
In 1978, Bro. F. O. A. Ojuolape (deceased) joined the Church from C.A.C Oke Iyanu, Itire (mother assembly), Lagos. He became the first Sunday School Supervisor in 1981 under the leadership of Pastor J. A. Olasehinde (deceased). In 1989, the Church established a new assembly in Ojodu (now a Zonal Headquarters). Elder F. O. A. Ojuolape (deceased) and others who lived within this axis were saddled with the responsibility of managing the new assembly. In 1991, Brother John Agbaje became an acting supervisor but later left for MFM in 1993, while Elder D. O. Jegede became his successor. However, in 1995, Elder D. O. Jegede was confirmed a substantive supervisor by Pastor J. O. Babayemi, while Elder S. A. Adegbesan became his successor in 2013 when the former went into full-time ministry under the leadership of Pastor M. O. Yusuff.
The Department later grew astronomically due to the solid foundation laid by the pioneer members.
This is usually held on Sundays in between the Yoruba and the English services. There are 13 Yoruba and 5 English classes.
Thank God for the quality teachers in the department, a very committed, dedicated and warm set of people. Some of the achievements recorded in the Department are listed below:
4. The upgrade of the Training Unit from the District to the District Coordinating Council level in 2022 by Pastor M.A. Ajayi. (KDCC Superintendent).
5. The hosting of Akinyele Sunday School Regional Rallies for 2 years consecutively.
This training unit evolved by coincidence. On a faithful day, Bro S. A. Adegbesan came up with some of the materials that had been used previously for seminars in the department, well documented. It was so fascinating that it spurred Elder D. O. Jegede to come up with the idea of setting up a Training Committee for the Department. Elder Joshua Olufemi Ojo and a few others were asked to look into this idea and they invariably came up with a beautiful set-up that is still relevant to date. This unit oversees the training of the intending and the old Teachers. Some of the facilitators then were:
Elder S. A. Adegbesan thus became the first Training Coordinator, followed by Elder Ayoola Doherty, then Elder S. A. Adegbesan later returned as the Training Coordinator when Elder Doherty relocated to Mowe. Subsequently, Deaconess B. O. Tokunboh and now Deaconess E.T. Onaderu took over in that succession.
Recently, the programme was upgraded from District affairs to a DCC programme by Pastor M. A. Ajayi.
This programme, which was designed for discipleship, started in 1988 by Evangelist D. D. Idowu (now Retired DCC Superintendent of Ijebu Igbo) with new and yet-to-be baptised members of the Church being the focus of the programme. Pastor D. D. Idowu brought the first set of teaching materials from Life Theological Seminary, Ikorodu. He co-opted some Sunday School Teachers who worked with him then. Notable among them were:
After his ordination, Pastor D. D. Idowu was transferred from Oke-Igbala. Evangelist F. F. Agun invariably succeeded him as a new leader and co-opted the under-listed teachers:
Christian Education is in three stages; namely –
Elder Doherty Ayoola upgraded the training manual for the baptismal class. Thereafter, the adult literacy class was established in 1995 and was anchored by Mrs. Olatunde (Mama Israel). The class is being taught presently by Deaconess Elizabeth O. Adeleke.
This programme was a child of necessity. Evangelist Biyi Onikosi (a Teenager) graced one of the children’s anniversaries in the early 90s, this captivated the interest of the children when he told the audience that he was a product of a particular Children’s Seminary in Lagos. Many of the children were enthusiastic in their quest to attend the same Seminary, but the department considered such a move too risky because of the distance. This necessitated the department to set up a committee to look into that quest and come up with a recommendation for the present programme.
Since its establishment, numerous students have graduated from the School and this has greatly impacted the success of the Children’s Anniversary.
Some of the products of the School are:
